Chi-le! Chi-le!

God of Miracles

“We are all well in the shelter the 33” –First note from Survivors many Weeks ago.

“I never used to pray…but down there I began to pray. I got closer to God.” Miner 28 Out

“Down there…it was God versus the Devil…and God won.” Chilean Miner

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Because of his great mercy he has given us a new birth to an ever-living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

1Pe 1:4  and to an inheritance kept in heaven for you that can’t be destroyed, corrupted, or changed.

1Pe 1:5  Through faith you are being protected by God’s power for a salvation that is ready to be revealed at the end of time.

1Pe 1:6  In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you have to suffer various kinds of trials,

1Pe 1:7  so that the genuineness of your faith, which is more valuable than gold that perishes when it is tested by fire, may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1Pe 1:8  Though you have not seen him, you love him. And even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,

1Pe 1:9  because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

1st Peter 1:3-9

Savior at San Jose Mine

Osman Araya Araya is rising up through a 2,000-foot shaft in the rocks of Chile inside the Fenix 2 capsule. The shaft is almost exactly the circumference of a manhole cover. The cable has been slowly winding in his lifeline for around 10 minutes and now I’m watching as the capsule rises from the ground. The rescues workers surrounding the area applaud, this is the third miracle I’ve witnessed tonight, and I’m watching live.

He bursts into tears, as his wife and he finally are able to touch each other after an unimaginable 60 days. After a long heartfelt moment they let each other go and he hugs the Chilean president, and a couple of other workers. Then he turns to all of the others behind the safety barricades and thanks them profusely, waving to them all. He’s wearing a miner’s helmet and a pair of very dark sunglasses to protect his eyesight. He settles down on a stretcher and they strap him in to transport him to a state of the art medical center that’s been built on site and as they wheel him away he waves again, and gives the rescuers the thumbs up. There is more applause, crying, laughter and tears.

This is the sixth miracle so far and people say miracles don’t happen anymore.

The first miracle at San Jose Mine was that the 30 men even survived the collapse, the mine that was opened in 1899 had numerous safety issues, and many did not feel safe working there. However they did so because they had families to support, new children were born, it was their livelihood.

They survived because they rationed what meager supplies they had, each miner was allowed to have two spoons of fish and 1 cracker every two days. They were down to their last rations when the search boreholes finally found them carrying the first fresh air they’d had in over 11 days.

As I write this the Fenix 2 capsule is arriving 2,000 feet down in the emergency chamber and they are starting to prepare the next miner, Jose Ojeda Vidal, for loading and departure.

At first they received supplies through a small tube that was not much wider than a small water bottle. They received medicine, food, water, and even a miniature projector t.v. so that they could watch the football (soccer) games. All of these were put in special tubes to send down the supply tube, then the miners sent up letters to family by placing thme in the supply tube, which was then winched to the surface.

Over the next weeks the miners split into three groups, which were assigned to different work details. One had rudimentary first aid training so he became the medic; others took care of their specialties, one became the voice and face of the entire group. A video camera hook up was made so that the miners could contact with family and loved ones over videophone.

Right now that alarm has been triggered which means the capsule is nearing the surface and the conclusion of yet another miracle.

The Return to Christ

Throughout the ordeal the trapped miners returned to their Catholic roots. They returned to prayers and to Jesus, and they received religious statues and other items. Trapped in the darkness they re-connected with their savior.

The capsule is up and I can see Jose in a green miners hard hat, the door has been opened, a doctor is listening to his pulse rate and now the rescue team is given the all clear. He’s stepped out now and is holding a Chilean flag; rescuers chant the national soccer team chant which now goes: Chi-le! Chi-Le! We must get all the miners out!

There are hugs all around and he has a huge smile on his face, and he lies down on the stretcher taking off his miners’ hat with a smile.

It is often the case that Christ comes to the forefront in our lives when we are at our lowest point. Maybe the miners quite rightly expected to die down there, and they wanted to be right with God, whatever the case they seem to have had a spiritual awakening.

I’m so glad that they turned back to their savior, that they found peace and solace in the knowledge that God is sovereign and is always looking out for those who seek Him out earnestly.

Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad because of you. Let those who love your salvation continually say, “God is great!”

Psalm 70:4

Return to The Surface

As I type it’s 3 a/m PST and the alarm has gone off again meaning the capsule is nearing the surface, they’ve just shown the wife and daughter of Claudio Yanez Munoz. It is extraordinary to see these miners returning to the surface, hauled up through the darkness to the light within the tight capsule.

Just like we have to come to the cross and give up our lives and sins to Jesus Christ to be saved we are saved and seated IN Christ in Heaven. These miners are returned to the surface by placing their fears, concerns and worries aside and riding up IN the capsule.

Claudio is wearing a red helmet; he seems tired but relieved as his harness is removed. And now the reunion, I wish it wouldn’t end but in the end it has to, both mother and daughter receive long hugs. As he lies down on the stretcher he gives a hug to another rescuer. He is handed a phone by his daughter and speaks for a few moments, and then as the stretcher is rolled away he flashes a v for victory sign and then claps exuberantly.

As all of these miners come to the surface I thank God and praise Him for His loving kindness and His Agape (unconditional) love. Knowing that God is creator of all and in control of each and every event that has and will ever happen fills me with amazement.

I hope we all remember that Christ died for us and paid the price for our sins while we were dead in the darkness of sin. Everyday you need to remind yourselves of the amazing grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the amazing works He’s done for each and every one of us.

Reading the book of Ephesians is a great place to start.

Praise the God of Miracles!

In Christ,

Ross

Well said Ross. This is an excellent event to put in the context of God and faith.
