God is NOT a Co-Pilot

Eph 1:13  Christ also brought you the truth, which is the good news about how you can be saved. You put your faith in Christ and were given the promised Holy Spirit to show that you belong to God.

Ephesians 1:13

On the Streets

I spend a lot of my time walking from place to place with my bag slung over my shoulder, it’s much easier to chare the gospel with people when you’re not riding a bike or driving a car. I say this even though some wonderful Christian friends of mine are going to be letting me try out a bike of theirs soon, and I will certainly see how things go with that.- but back to the introduction.

I was walking along when I saw a little sign where the front license plate would normally be on a minivan I was passing and it said: God is my Co-Pilot. Now back in the 90’s I might very well have agreed with it being that in Adventism we had no understanding of The Holy Spirit. Now however this sign not only paints a said picture of some peoples understanding of Bible truth, but I worry about people who still espouse such ideas.

 The Problem with the Co-Pilot

The first major problem we have is that God is the Co-Pilot.

You see this might seem very good of you to giving God the Co-Pilot position in the cockpit of your life, but it’s entirely false. You see it puts you in the position of Captain and as you can see from 1st Ephesians 1:13 The Holy Spirit, part of the Trinity that makes up GOD is in control of your life. You Belong to GOD.

1Co 6:19  You surely know that your body is a temple where the Holy Spirit lives. The Spirit is in you and is a gift from God. You are no longer your own.

1Co 6:20  God paid a great price for you. So use your body to honor God.

This is an overview and expositional teaching on Luke Chapter 21, I hope you learn something new from this and you can feel free to point out to me things that I probably didn’t think to touch on. As always have a Bible handy so you can read your favorite version, as the Holy Spirit for guidance and dive right in.

The Gosepl of Luke: Chapter 21

Luke 21

Luke 21:1  And having looked up, He saw the rich ones putting their gifts into the treasury.

Luke 21:2  And He also saw a certain poor widow putting two lepta there.

Luke 21:3  And He said, Truly I say to you, This poor widow put in more than all.

Luke 21:4  For all these out of their abundance put into the gifts to God, but she out of her poverty put in all the living which she had.

Luke 21 1-4

Jesus and the disciples are at the temple and they can’t help but hear the sounds of the rich putting their wealth into the coffers. Simply because the rich of the day (and arguably today) like to make a big scene out of their contributions, and when the collection containers are made out of bronze a lot of coins make a lot of noise.

Then this wonderful old lady, a widow comes up, and she puts two coins in. Their total today would be about half a penny. Odds are it was probably a bit embarrassing for her; it would after all barely make a sound.

Perhaps the disciples were muttering amongst themselves about the rich folks lavish gifts but Jesus points out that the widow gave all that she had, while the rich gave only a portion of what they had tons of.

The Leading Light

105 Your word is a lamp for my feet (A)
and a light on my path.

Psalm 119:105 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

The Word

The Word of God is what the Christian feeds on, after all we cannot survive till the end if we do not feed on spiritual as well as physical food and meals. It is through reading the Bible that we gain the spritual knowledge to make it through the day.

A Lamp

The lamp mentioned here is not a flashlight. It doesn’t have L.E.D.’s, and does not shine a powerful beam of light hundreds of feet. The lamp here is a handcrafted lamp made out of clay and dried in the sun or over a fire. Once it is prepared oil is put inside it, and then a wick is placed into the oil at the spout. This is a Biblical lamp or an oil lamp.

This kind of lamp would light the nearby pathways with a flickering light, a light enough to see a few steps in front or behind.

The picture here in verse 105 is to keep in the word of God, and it will illuminate just enough for you to move on in faith. God wants a personal relationship of trust, trust the Holy Spirit to lead you even if you can’t see more than a few steps ahead. That’s why it’s a daily walk.

To Illumine the Feet and the Path

This flickering light is there to cast just enough to show your feet on the narrow path that leads to a continued relationship with God. It can be a lot scary when you first put that faith in what cannot at times be seen but the promise in this verse is that if you walk in the Lord, and study His word- if you maintain a proper relationship with Him, he will always direct you down the only path that leads to an eternity with Him.

A Prayer

Dear Lord,

Help me to trust your word, help me to follow in the pathway you illuminate for me. Help me to trust you to lead me deeper and deeper into a eternal friendship with you. This I pray in Jesus name.

Amen.

In Christ,

Ross

God of Wonders

Our God is a God of wonders one is captured below through the lense of my camera and at the end of this post you’ll also find the lyrics to God of Wonders by Third Day. To the right is a image of a section of the Milky Way, our Galaxy, which God created just like the rest of the Universe.

"God is not far from any one of us."

When I look to creation I cannot help but see God tirelessly revealing himself to all those upon the earth. With great patience He shows with the eagle on the wing, the eruption of a volcano, the towering thunderheads and the amazing sunsets that He is the creator and sustainer of all.

God is in control of all creation.

Heres the latest Lyrics, I call this song:

New Creation (2010)

I was conceived a sinner long before I was born.

Before I took my first breath or saw the light of dawn.

Long before I screamed my lungs out by sin my soul was torn.

And when I finally came out another sinner faced the morn.

Although I grew older and older I remained quite dead.

My hair went from straight, to curly, to straight atop my head.

I went on through life, all full of strife, unaware of the things that were said.

About you…Lord about you!

Never Ever Die

25 Jesus said to her, “I am (A) the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me, (B) even if he dies, will live. (C) 26 Everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die—ever. (D) Do you believe this?”

John 11:25-26 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

Undying One

Jesus was Crucified for our sins and he Died so that we could find eternal life in Him. He died to take our just and most deserved punishment so that we could come to Him and gain eternal life.

Gift of Eternity

This eternal life isn’t something that we eventually acquire it is something that we get as soon as we repent and accept the gift of eternal life, from God, through the death of His son.

This eternal life lasts forever, it is our spirit that lasts forever, our spirit is where our true identity lies. Our identity in Christ is through our Spirit and the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit, working together to seal us for Heaven.

In fact for the Christian who dies we die to our mortal life and take our first breath of our spiritual life the very next moment.

You can be an undying one too.

In the verses the original reading of the last few words is Never No Never die.

It doesn’t get much more emphatic than that.

The Call to Be Committed

1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Col 3:1-4 (KJV)

People Say the Strangest Things

If you’re a Christian, if you’ve become a new creation, and are now the temple of the Holy Spirit, I’m quite positive that you’ve probably been told the following on at least one occasion.

You’re so heavenly minded you’re no earthly good.

However in this text it is quite clear than whenever possible our thoughts are to be centered in Heaven. In the morning when we wake up we should be thinking of Heaven simply because one of the most important things to do in the morning is communicate with God through prayer. When you keep in mind that each day you’re given on this earth, as a Christian is a day to work in the local mission field you’ll begin to understand why we’re supposed to keep our focus heavenly. If you fail to ask God to fill you anew with the Holy Spirit you can hardly expect to witness to others effectively and odds are your outlook on the day will be affected for the worse.

Getting The Message Out

Act 2:17 ‘This is what I will do in the last days, God says: I will pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your young men will see visions, and your old men will have dreams.
Act 2:18 Yes, even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will proclaim my message.

Acts 2:17-18

Proclaiming the Message of God

Proclaiming the message of God is something that I am driven to do, I just can’t help it and I don’t even have to be around anyone. The message of Gods’ Love, the Sacrifice of His Son, and his Gift of Eternal life through Grace spill out of my mouth simply when I’m walking down the street. This is why I now carry a digital voice recorder with me wherever I go because every declaration of the Message of God is so powerful that it shouldn’t just grace my ears but even those of just one other person.

Come Quickly...Distress

C.Q.D.

Jeremiah 6:10 Whom can I speak to? Whom can I give a warning to? Who will listen? Their ears are plugged, and they aren’t able to pay attention. When the LORD speaks his word to them, they show contempt for it and object to it.
Jeremiah 6:10

April 14th 1912

The R.M.S. Titanic plies through the water at great speed as it moves across the Atlantic, the water is glassy smooth and there is no moonlight. The bow of the massive ship cuts through the water casting large waves off and quickly leaving them in its wake. It’s cold this night, but those inside don’t feel it, especially those in the Smoking Room in front of the fireplace. The wealth and opulence of the ship is practically drowned by the wealth of the individual men standing about puffing on expensive cigarettes and tipping back intricately carved glasses full of brandy.

“Oh this ship is quite a wondrous creation.”

“Indeed, not even God could sink this ship.”

The Just Judgment: Eternal Hell and Eternal Heaven

Isa 66:22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain.
Isa 66:23 From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD.
Isa 66:24 “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Isaiah 66:22-24

Note: I will NOT be doing an expositional teaching on the above verses but reading them will sober you up for what I’m about to share with you. Also be warned if you select to print this out it’s a 12 PAGE Word Document turned into a post…so be sure you have enough paper in the tray.

Warning: I refuse to mince words during this post, as this topic is far too important to worry about political correctness. However while the first half of this post is about how we are predestined to go to Hell because of sin the second half is about how we can just as easily get to Heaven. Please read this post all the way to the end, it could save you from eternal death to eternal life.

To Annihilate or Not Annihilate that is The Question

While growing up in Adventism I could not conceive of eternal hellfire so it was a good thing that Adventists taught Annihilationism. To be certain it made the thought of messing up much easier: “Hmmm I wonder if I’ve forgotten to pray for forgiveness for all my sins today…oh what do I care really I’m gonna be ash in mere moments. Sure I’d rather go to Heaven but I’ve probably missed a sin already, so at least I will be going out in a blaze of glory.”

I mean let’s not pay attention to the fact that passages state of ETERNAL DAMNATION and ENDLESS HELLFIRE in the LAKE OF FIRE. God is kind, God is loving, and how could God send good people to Hell anyway?

First off God is indeed Kind and Loving that goes beyond saying, but He is also a God of Justice. And Justice must be served on both sides of the equation and that’s of key importance, however I’ll return to that later. You see I have an issue with the last statement at the end of the above paragraph, after God is Good and God is loving are two lies that ask a question. We need to answer those questions first.
