The Holy Spirit and The Christian

16 If you love Me, you will keep My commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit of truth; the world is unable to receive Him, because it doesn’t see Him or know Him. But you do know Him, because He remains with you and will be in you.
John 14:16-17 (KJV)

It’s been just a few moments since Jesus wonderful promise to prepare a Dwelling Place for each of us in His Father’s House in Heaven. And that he would return and call us to be with Him, so that we as His Bride can live with Him forever. It is a wonderful promise and yet He promised something a few verses later that would keep His Disciples, the founders of Christianity, deeply involved with Christ. Something to help in their belief because soon enough Jesus would be crucified, raised from the dead, and 40 days later be raised up to Heaven and His place at the right hand of God.

Here Jesus promises a new counselor or as the KJV version says comforter called The Holy Spirit (or Holy Ghost). This comforter had been with them subtly changing their lives from the outside in but notice that when the comforter would come, thanks to the full outpouring, he would be in them.

The Filling of the Apostles with the Holy Spirit

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4 (KJV)

Here in Acts 2 on the day of Pentecost the promised Comforter arrives. Here it says that all the disciples were meeting together and talking of Jesus and of their beliefs, they may even have been in the Upper Room where Jesus promised them the Holy Spirit. Then with the sound of a mighty rushing wind, tongues of flame came and sat upon each of them, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. And through the Holy Spirit they spoke in other languages that they had previously not known. (Some wonderful Pentecostal Brothers and Sisters will say that if you cannot speak in other tongues (languages) that you don’t have the Holy Spirit in you.) That is not true as not everyone receives the same gifts from the Holy Spirit.

However the most important aspect of the Holy Spirit is that a part of the Trinity is living in you and sealing you.

The Christian is Saved and Sealed by the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1 Cor 6:19-20 (KJV)

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Eph 4:30 (KJV)

This is such a phenomenal truth that I can’t believe I missed it for as long as I did, this truth will change your daily life and your walk with God through your life will never be the same again. When you are baptized you are not baptized simply by the water but by the Spirit, the Holy Spirit takes residence in you!

You remember the Tabernacle in the desert with the Israelites during the Exodus? Do you remember the Temple built by David and later the Temple built by Solomon? Do you remember what was inside each of those buildings? God dwelled in those buildings!

Look at what Paul is revealing here He’s saying that I am a Temple, my body is a Sanctuary, for the Holy Spirit. God, The Holy Spirit is in each and every believer.

In the quote from Ephesians Paul wants to make it perfectly clear that not only is the Holy Spirit in us but it seals us unto the day of redemption. The Holy Spirit in us punches our ticket, reserves our place if you will, in Heaven!

The Spiritual Gifts

7 Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! 8 The variety is wonderful:
wise counsel clear understanding 9 simple trust healing the sick 10 miraculous acts proclamation distinguishing between spirits tongues interpretation of tongues.
11 All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God. He decides who gets what, and when.
1 Cor 12:7-11 (MSG)

The Holy Spirit bestows gifts on each believer to help in sharing the Power and Grace of God with those around them. Personally I believe that the Lord has given me the spiritual gifts of discovering and understanding His word and proclaiming it to others. Notice however that it is up to God through the Holy Spirit to dispense these gifts, as they are needed and when they are needed.

One who speaks in tongues needs one with them who interprets tongues or how can we know what they are saying is a blessing to others?

God uses every believer and every gift to further His reach around the world.

The Amazing Reality of the Holy Spirit

When you became a believer, you were not only baptized by water to show your allegiance to other Christians; you were baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit. Once the Holy Spirit is in you a journey begins hand in hand with God a Journey that lasts a lifetime. It is a journey of regeneration and rehabilitation; the Holy Spirit will slowly work with you hand in hand to wash your spirit clean.

5 Not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Titus 3:4-5 (KJV)

Our Spirit, which Sin had quenched, is aflame anew with the wondrous grace of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Our Spirit is what the Lord died on the Cross to save. Our body WILL die unless the Lord comes to take us home before we die, but the Spirit, OUR Spirit is ETERNAL.

1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
2 Cor 5:1-11 (KJV)

Our body is a Tent, our Spirit lives in this Tent until the Tent falls down, and our Spirit goes to be present with the Lord! Our body returns to the dust but our Spirit, our eternal part goes up to Heaven to the Judgment (Bema) Seat of Christ.

There we will be judged not about whether we have eternal life, or whether we are recipients of Heaven.

We already HAVE eternal life we are already in Heaven.

We are judged over the things we’ve done during our time on earth and how much of it was self-centered and how much drew others to God.

11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. 14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
1 Cor 3:11-15 (KJV)

The above speaks of the Bema Seat of Christ all of our works will be tested by Holy fire, what is useless will be burned away, but what was used for Christ will be turned into reward. We’ll all have plenty of work that gets burned in the fire; none of use will stand proudly before our Holy and Perfect Savior. God will have to wipe away tears from our eyes, but despite suffering loss we will still live with our savior for eternity!

What God has Started will Be Finished

29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. Romans 8:29-30 (KJV)

Paul is letting us know that even before we found God He knew we would be His Children. That we were predestined to become Believers through His Son Jesus Christ, who was the first to conquer death.

As believers as I’ve shown we have the Holy Spirit living in us.

And look at verse 30 and AMAZING promise that God himself will fulfill.

God the Father called to us while we were sinners through the drawing of the Holy Spirit, by accepting the death of His Son Jesus the Holy Spirit was moved from outside to INSIDE and we were Justified. And through the perfect life of Jesus and His sacrificial death we EHAVE BEEN Glorified!

God the Father Predestined us.

God the Son Died for us and through His death Saved us.

God the Holy Spirit washed our Spirit and heart Sanctifying and Regenerating us preparing our Spirit for Eternity.

Praise the Lord!

In Christ,

Ross
