A Case of Perspective and Belief

In God We Trust

“…Consider Christianity’s beginnings: Few were around to hear Jesus’ preaching’s, far fewer still claimed to have witnessed the Resurrection; the faith spreads nevertheless. How, a few centuries later, its sublime and bighearted message would be ignored and countless people be terrorized by its name, is baffling. What’s happening in America today, the growing number of hate-filled, amped-up fanatics who claim they have the God given right to define their nation and impose their fundamentalist vision on all of its citizens and, ultimately, on the rest of the planet is no less baffling- or dangerous, all the more so with their collective death wish regarding the supposedly approaching End of Days.” Raymond Khoury (Authors Note: The Sign)

The Sign

The Sign is an exciting, action packed thrill ride of a novel that is also smart as a whip and full of fascinating ideas. This should not come as a surprise because the author/screenwriter Raymond Khoury has chosen to tackle an interesting and explosive topic the conflagration that is the joining of Religion and Politics. It is a good entertainment, what I would term a novel of faction, in other words fiction that is probably already fact (in fact a number of the technologies represented in the novel already exist in some form.)

It is also clear that Mr. Khoury has very clear stance in his beliefs, and I applaud him for that, I’d rather someone is certain of their beliefs and stands beside them. As I made my way through the novel following the intricate if not overly concealed plot twists, and living along with the characters as they batted around point and counter point, belief and unbelief I began to sense where the author stood.

Therefore I wasn’t terribly shocked when I found the above segment that I’ve quoted above from the authors note at the back of the book. For a few nights I’ve read it over and run it over my mental taste buds and I’ve decided to comment on it. These comments are not made as any kind of challenge they are simply being made to share my position on Mr. Khoury’ comments.

The Beginnings

“…Consider Christianity’s beginnings: Few were around to hear Jesus’ preaching’s, far fewer still claimed to have witnessed the Resurrection; the faith spreads nevertheless.

When I consider the very beginning I look farther back than Jesus ministry on earth and I think it’s a key factor.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.” John 1 v 1-3 HCSB (Holman Christian Standard)

Here the Apostle John is making it clear that long before Jesus Christ stepped down from His exalted place in Heaven and became God in Man, He as The Word of God created everything. If you really want to get into it, God one in essence three in part (Father, Son, Spirit) was the Initiator of the Big Bang. As far as I’m concerned the Bible is pretty clear on that, God (who’s always existed) created everything out of nothing and from a scientific point of view a Bang needs something to light its fuse.

I state the above because it’s going to be very important later.

Certainly there were fewer people around to hear Jesus TEACHINGS, for though we have labeled the Sermon on the Mount well the SERMON on the mount Jesus was a Rabbi, a Teacher. He taught those who followed Him in a way that other Rabbi’s could not, with authority, not like other Rabbi’s who would often Teach by comparing their teachings to other Rabbi’s.

Jesus caused a stir; he taught from the heart, He made claims that no one dared to claim. He even went so far to claim He was God (since according to Rabbinical teaching only God could forgive sins) and yet He was doing it left right and center. His numbers swelled; in fact by the time He was crucified He had quite a following.

However even those closest to Him expected Him to conquer their oppressors (Rome) and set up the Hebrews as and unconquerable Kingdom. They thought Jesus was going to be a conquering Messiah because they simply couldn’t understand how He could be both. He even told His closest disciples time and again that He would be Crucified and rise again in 3 Days, but they failed to get it.

The Crucifixion and Aftermath

Yet he WAS crucified by those He came to save. They did NOT see Him for who He really was. Yet God did raise Him from the dead after 3 Days. (In Hebrew any part of a Day was counted as a full day: Into the tomb on Friday, All of Saturday, and Part of Sunday.)

At first the Disciples didn’t believe the women when they came back from the tomb, why would they, women of the day were regarded as being as good a witness as a blind and deaf person. However that didn’t stop the Resurrected Christ from appearing to them all and many others over the next 40 Days.

If you were a witness to this, the faith of you would grow also. Lest we forget in the end James Jesus Brother who was once and unbeliever and Saul the greatest persecutor of Christians, both became believers after having personal encounters with the risen Christ.

Baffling, really?

How, a few centuries later, its sublime and bighearted message would be ignored and countless people be terrorized by its name, is baffling.

There is nothing surprising let alone baffling about this, unfortunately, and the cause of the problem is simple.

SIN.

That’s right, that thing called sin that everyone wants to deny the existence of is why the vast majority of people have ignored the wonderful message. Sin is also what makes everyone including Religious people take divergent and oft times opposing viewpoints on even the slightest Biblical doctrine.

There is a Problem

What’s happening in America today, the growing number of hate-filled, amped-up fanatics who claim they have the God given right to define their nation and impose their fundamentalist vision on all of its citizens and, ultimately, on the rest of the planet is no less baffling- or dangerous,

It is very sad the number of churches, people and groups that teach hate, hate of a certain group of people, idea, or person let alone a religion is unfortunate. It was also always going to happen, there was no way it could not and would not happen. Once God created humanity (he did create everything remember) with the freedom of choice and just like Satan and 1/3rd of the Angels of Heaven we chose sin. There was no stopping the spread of Sin in fact Sin has spread and infected this planet in a far more deep and insidious way than Christianity.

There is a Solution

You see when Christ died on that cross he was a Man who had lived a sinless life, He was a perfect substitution, a living sacrifice to SAVE us from SIN. He took our death penalty upon Himself so that we could once again have a forever relationship with our Creator and God. Through that death, I have been given eternal life and you can have that gift too, He gave Himself willingly, we simply have to come to Him, admit we’re sinners and have no chance without Him. Since the day I made that choice, the Holy Spirit has been continually transforming me, and He’s sealed me for Heaven. He can do the same for you too.

Yes We’re Blunt

I’ll admit Christianity is very blunt; it is not designed to be easy, there are many truths that a great many “Christians” smooth over or flat out ignore. There are many “Christians” who accept all sorts of things that God would not accept in His church.

Let me be blunt or fundamental if you will:

1) God created everything, nothing evolved.
2) Homosexual Behavior is a SIN (Romans 1: 26-27)
3) Jesus is the only way to be Saved. (John 14:6)

That’s just a few of the things a strongly believe; however I don’t hate Gays, Lesbians, or a particular national people. And I certainly don’t agree with people who do that claim to be Christian, however being Gay or Lesbian is a Sin and so I do try and get that point across to those that I meet. Some are receptive and others are not but if a topic is broached with LOVE instead of HATE as you’d probably imagine the outcomes will be markedly different.

The Loss of Morality

I find it sad that it should be alarming to return to fundamentals that were the moral foundation for this very country. The only thing that makes sense is that Sin has perverted the morals of people over time so much that now there’s a new morality. This new morality is whatever you personally think is right is in fact right and acceptable.

This is of course an untenable position if you believe in God as the creator, because He gave us a set of rules to follow, ten of them. Actually they’re designed to make us realize how morally bankrupt we are and to point us to the only way of Salvation, Jesus death on the cross for our sins.

If you make that decision than this final segment make a whole lot more sense.

End of Days: The Tribulation

…or dangerous, all the more so with their collective death wish regarding the supposedly approaching End of Days.” Raymond Khoury (Authors Note: The Sign)

The Bride and the Groom and Heaven

Christians don’t have a death wish in fact once you’re saved you HAVE eternal life. On top of that you are called to share your faith with those you meet to bring more to the saving Grace of Jesus Christ. And those that accept that gift become part of the Bride of Christ, the global Christian church and soon Jesus is going to come and take us to Heaven to live with Him forever.

The Earth and those Left Behind

Will have Seven Years of Tribulation and according to the Bible by the end of that time 3/4ths of the entire population will be dead. And while some will be saved by believing in Christ and either surviving till the end or being killed for their beliefs most will choose instead to laugh in God’s face. They will be so wrapped up in the world that they will mourn it’s destruction, they will laugh at and Curse God.

However at the end of that time every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

And I believe that those who are lost are lost to an Eternal Hell, just as those that are saved are saved to Eternal Life in a New Heavens and New Earth.

A Simple Question

It all boils down to this simple question:

Are you willing to bet your eternity on your beliefs?

I am, and I hope those that have read till the end will also come to realize that if nothing else it makes sense to look things over for yourselves.

In Christ,

Ross
